Although Balzac was knocked out by these prints, death really did seem to stalk their creator. This series, which is called Voyage pour l'éternité ("The Final Journey"), is a version of Holbein's Dance of Death. One of its rarities is a suite of prints which turned Balzac himself into a Grandville fan. Mounted at the former home of Honoré de Balzac, it features some of the cartoonist's finest work. The Paris show Grandville and Balzac hopes to change that. From the 1930s through the 1950s, Surrealists worshipped him. From Gustave Doré to the Walt Disney studios, his zoomorphic cartoons have countless inheritors. He was the first star of French caricature's great age.
